Get involved with the Roadshow

Our services have the most impact when we work closely with the local communities we’re in. Whether you’re interested in volunteering or working alongside us in a health professional role, we would love to hear from you.

Our Health Awareness Volunteer initiative came to life in 2012. We now have volunteers on our North East, North West and London units. They hand out leaflets, share our key messages and help encourage visitors to come on board. Our volunteers are a really important part of the Roadshow team and they have helped us to reach even more people in the community.

Meet our volunteers

Alex is a breast cancer survivor and has been volunteering on the Roadshow since 2012. Her personal experience of cancer means she is passionate about spreading the word about early detection in the communities we visit.

Dave, one of our volunteers in the North West of England, who is living with oesophageal cancer, has been helping out on the Cancer Awareness Roadshow since 2015.

"Sun, wind, rain, hail, rain or snow - nothing stops the team from handing out leaflets and engaging with the public! You never quite know who you'll meet, or what they want to talk about. Without exception, everyone working for Cancer Research UK on the Roadshow has made me feel like part of the team.’ – Dave.

Interested in volunteering?

We’re looking for people who are interested in raising awareness of cancer in their local community. You’ll need to be able to communicate clearly and engage with lots of different people. You don’t need any previous experience or knowledge – just the enthusiasm and willingness to learn.

It’s a great way to develop your skills, gain experience and make a difference. You’ll get to meet new people and become part of a supportive, friendly team. All our volunteers receive full cancer awareness training and ongoing support from our Cancer Awareness Nurses.

Applications for the Health Awareness Volunteer role are now closed. If you’re interested in becoming a Health Awareness Volunteer, please keep an eye on this page for when we re-open applications. Alternatively, you can register your interest using the button on this page and we’ll get back in touch with you.

If you have any questions, please email healthawarenessvolunteering@cancer.org.uk.

We work closely with public health partners in each area we visit who help signpost people to local services. So far more than 1,000 local health staff have joined us, including stop smoking advisors, health trainers and screening nurses.

“The Cancer Awareness Roadshow adds value to services already available within our local area by providing sound advice and signposting individuals. They are a valuable source of first contact information and can help immensely in the community.” - Stop smoking advisor
“Working with Lesley and Denise from Cancer Research UK has not only been a pleasure but has been a real asset to the work I do around Physical Activity. Their engagement with the public around an incredibly difficult subject is done with care and compassion yet delivered with unquestionable knowledge which makes people feel as ease. This makes my work easy as with their skill and the branding of Cancer Research UK it adds a real credibility to the work myself and my team carry out.” – Health Worker.

Our activity offers a unique opportunity for you to access key groups within your community, as well as learn more about cancer prevention and early detection. If you work in public health in your area, we’d love to hear from you.
